Children's Museum in Pueblo hosts serious summer fun
The Buell Children’s Museum at the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center in Pueblo is celebrating its 10th anniversary in a big way, with a summer chock-full of festivities centered around the number 10, including an earlier opening time of 10 a.m.
So grab the kids and head to the museum for 10 Saturdays of interactive art classes included with admission, along with special celebrations on the 10th of July and August. Children are sure to be tantalized by the exhibit’s Jellyfish Jubilee, amazing PlasmaCars, fairy and troll forest friends, party art, bridge-construction projects, Catch-A-Dragon Puppet Theater and much more.
On July 10, a Fairy House Garden Tour is the featured event, with fairy
troll houses constructed by children from materials found in nature displayed on the front lawn. Enjoy dainty fairy cakes, face painting, sketching, and the music of harpist Karen Anderson, then watch “Kristen’s Fairy House” at 3:15 p.m. in the Magic Carpet Theater.
It’s all about bridges on Aug. 10, when children can see examples of engineering, construction and weight-bearing physics during the Peace Bridge Project. They can connect their own self-made bridges to those made by others to make one big bridge. From noon to 2 p.m., the Pueblo Woodworkers will provide wood-turning demonstrations, while Ed Hill entertains with silly songs.
With a nod to the Royal Gorge Bridge, which recently celebrated its 80th birthday, visitors will receive a discount coupon to the attraction.
Fun with wheels
While at the Buell Children’s Museum, relive the art of rock ‘n’ roll music and classic cars with a visit to the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center’s “Rock ‘n’ Rods” exhibit. Cruise through custom cars and delve into the art behind some of the best designs.
Explore the progression of auto design from initial drawings to the actual finished vehicle. Then discover some of the best art on the rock ‘n’ roll scene — the “rock ‘n’ roll” poster.
