AROUND TOWN: McCormack wins Rotary award
Dennis McCormack, who recently received the President’s Award from The Home Front Cares, also was awarded the second annual Joe Henjum “Service Above Self” Award by the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs.
The award, presented Nov. 4, is “dedicated to a recipient who demonstrates tireless dedication to serving others’ needs above their own while making a meaningful difference in their lives.”
McCormack was an Army helicopter pilot with three tours in Vietnam and in the Persian Gulf.
He retired from active military duty in 1993 and is a volunteer facilitator with the Colorado Injured Military Support Network. He is active with the Sentinels of Freedom, which provides scholarships to severely disabled veterans, and is a Peer Specialist with the Veterans Trauma Court, serving as a mentor to veterans with significant legal issues.
In 2007, McCormack established the Army Wounded Warrior program at Fort Carson, as the sole advocate for returning wounded military personnel, supporting the most severely wounded and injured soldiers with benefits, counseling, career guidance and education opportunities.
The Rotary honor cited, “His tireless support of our soldiers and their families has touched and improved many lives.”
