AROUND TOWN: American Girl Fashion Show

Sunday tea was a special occasion on Oct. 16 as the Colorado Springs Alumnae Panhellenic Association presented its annual treat for doll-loving girls and their families and, yes, even some daddies and grandpas, at Cheyenne Mountain Resort.

Dressed in Sunday best, many stylish little ones wore similar colors or identical outfits to their American Girl dolls. Others became runway models, their authentic clothing telling the stories of the different eras from history represented by the popular dolls and their accompanying books.

The fourth annual event again raised funds for Kidpower, which empowers young people. Director Jan Isaacs Henry told the 600 girls, friends and families, “We teach people safety. All children deserve to be safe” from abuse, bullying and abduction.

Dolls were treated to new hairdos or a little cleaning up by two volunteers from Madison’s Hope, Katelyn Carmignani and Katie Shriver. Usually Madison’s Hope works with abused or no-longer-used dolls, which are made good-as-new to be given to girls who wouldn’t otherwise have an American Girl doll. There were 10 dolls given to girls this year, one of them to a girl who lost her home in the Joplin, Mo., tornado.
