Skiable year on Pikes Peak? The jury is still out

THE GAZETTE

We got a tip that an avalanche had closed the Pikes Peak Highway this weekend, so I talked to highway manager Jack Glavan this morning.

He says a small snowslide went across the road a couple weeks ago, but it’s been the wind and blowing snow that have kept the road closed to the summit since Presidents Day.

Asked if the north face will be skiable this spring, he said not many are attempting it yet, as it’s icy and hard-packed, and he doesn’t know if conditions will be favorable by the time it gets soft for spring skiing.

The Snotel monitoring site at Glen Cove reports a snow depth of 31 inches, dropping 1 to 3 inches a day with recent warmth, so a lot will probably depend on how many spring storms we get.
