  • Trimble Outdoors app does it all on your phone

    McClatchy Newspapers

When you're on a hike, run, bike ride, etc., you want to limit the number of gadgets you're carrying. But you still want to have access to emergency phone calls, stay on track (i.e. not get lost) and measure your performance.

Trimble Outdoors, a software product family from Trimble, has an application for your phone that lets you do all of this.

First, visit the Web site (TrimbleOutdoors.com) to plan out your desired route, peek at routes from others enjoying the same activity or see your training history.

For a more complete experience, the phone application comes equipped with a GPS, which will prevent you from getting lost, especially if you're trying out a new route. The application also keeps track of your time, speed, distance traveled and calories burned. And it will keep track of it in a weekly log for analysis.

Rates for the application may differ based on carrier and phone model. There are easy links for all compatible phones on the site.
