Soap actor pressured to kill his dog, then kills himself

Nick Santino, who has been on "All My Children," "Guiding Light" and "Gossip Girl," had to put down his 5-year-old pit bull because of pressure from the management of his apartment building in New York City.

Then, according to the New York Post, Santino killed himself. The newspaper said he told friends he had "betrayed my best friend," his pit bull Rocco. The dog was euthanized on Santino's 47th birthday, according to the Post.

"Rocco trusted me and I failed him," Santino wrote in a suicide note, a friend told the Post. "He didn't deserve this."

The management of his apartment had reportedly instituted several rules about dogs, including a ban on pit bulls in 2010, but said it did not apply to any that already lived in the building, the Post said. However, neighbors told the post that management and some residents had harassed Santino about Rocco.

The Post said Santino and Rocco will be buried together.
