Sesame Canyon is rare find
This little-known but close-by hike through a mossy, mystical little canyon is best for people who want to be somewhere rather than go somewhere. It's gorgeous, especially when washed with spring rain.
To get there
From U.S. Highway 24 head south on 26th Street to a four-way stop with Lower Gold Camp Road. Drive through the stop sign to where 26th Street dead ends in about a mile at the bottom of High Drive. Park on the left.
The hike
This old path is unmarked by modern Forest Service signs but still worn by generations of hikers whose collective knowledge of these beloved hills predates any official trailheads. The trail probably started as a short foray spurring off from the 1880s mule road up Bear Creek to Lake Moraine and then to the summit of Pikes Peak.
Now you can find Sesame Canyon by walking a half-mile up High Drive. When you start, Bear Creek will be on your right. Within a few minutes you'll cross an old stone bridge leaving the creek on your left. In less than a quarter mile, you'll cross the creek again. Immediately, look for the Sesame Canyon trail darting up a small streambed on your left.
The well-defined trail is clear but easy to miss because there is no marker.
The trail ascends a small, steep valley through mossy pine and fir woods in less than a mile.
Take your time to linger in the pretty spots.
Sesame Canyon climbs steeply to a saddle.
Go right at the saddle and the trail hits the Captain Jack's multiuse trail. This trail is heavily used by motorcycles and bikes, and not recommended for hikers. Go left and a faint social trail goes up to a view point. Return the way you came.
Details
Bikers be cool. The damage done by riding this steep trail is not worth the ride. Dogs allowed on leash.
