Back Shelf Pick: In this month of vampires, 'Daybreakers' boasts fun fangs

THE GAZETTE

“Daybreakers” (2009) — June seems to be the month of the fang. Season three of HBO’s “True Blood” started Sunday, and the next installment of the “Twilight” series is due out June 30.

“Daybreakers” is one sharp vamp movie. It reminds me of “District 9,” in that it starts out with a potent sci-fi metaphor (vampires sucking their unnatural resources dry as we’re sucking oil) then morphs into a terrific action thriller about a virus that turns most of the population into vampires. I love the way the film normalizes vampires, including showing them waiting in line for their morning (blood-spiked) coffee.
