Back-Shelf Pick: 'This Is It' gives interesting, if not deep, look at King of Pop
“This Is It” (2009) — I always want more. I don’t think the definitive documentary about who the heck Michael Jackson really was has been made. Still, this look behind the scenes in preparation of a concert tour that never happened gives us a fascinating glimpse of the artist.
At 50, the late King of Pop still had the moves (including his signature moon walk) and the singing chops. He also displayed a graceful style in how he worked with the director and his peers, firm in his obsession with perfection while forgiving of others’ slips.
It clearly took a ton of rehearsal footage to put this together to look like a single performance. But it works, and although Jackson often skips high notes to save his voice, you get a sense of what that amazing concert would have been like.
