Back-Shelf Pick: 'Youth in Revolt' not a typical tale

THE GAZETTE
“Youth in Revolt” (2009) — Michael Cera (“Superbad”) stars in what seems at first a typical underdog-guy-trying- deperately-to-win-super-hot-girl comedy. But this film has a serious streak of weirdness, both in its style, which incorporates animation at random times, and the plot, which has Cera’s character develop a cool, French bad-boy alter ego.
The cool alter ego gives him horrible, criminally over-the-top advice to woo his girl, and that’s when the movie really takes off.
“Youth in Revolt” reminds me of Woody Allen’s “Play It Again, Sam” — if Woody had been taking heavy doses of funny mushrooms.
