Colorado Springs poet and hair stylist Amber Ridenour Walker, who grew up in Manson, Wash., near Lake Chelan, themed her first book of poetry, "Surfacing," around the worst school-related accident in the state's history. A school bus carrying 22 people slid off a road in 1945 and plunged into the lake. Nine bodies were never recovered. The accident was the impetus for the book, but Walker also explored the many other ways people can metaphorically drown in their hometown. The book was released last summer.
